Our Vision

Once isolated and invisible, now united and growing stronger, we are raising our voices and preparing for the future.

Local 880 began with 200 home care workers, rooted in their communities, but invisible to society at large. Many thought that we were too poor and too isolated to organize. Others simply didn’t think it was worth it. Now, we stand 70,000 strong, proud of past victories and ready to take on the challenges of the future. Members and staff have embarked on our Ten-Year Vision, a strategic plan to make Local 880 even stronger in the coming decade.

The Ten-Year Vision
Our vision is for Local 880 to continue our tradition of being a strong and vibrant community union and grow to connect over 100,000 home care and child care workers throughout the Midwest.

•    Our jobs will be good jobs, with living wages, affordable health care and a
      secure retirement.
•    We will have the education and training we need to succeed and advance in
      our careers.
•    Our communities and loved ones will have access to quality, affordable
      health care.
•    We will bring politics back to the people, taking action on issues that matter
      to all working families.
•    No matter how big and powerful we grow, no member will ever feel like a
      number.

Turning Ideas into Action

Brainstorming session

Faced with the challenges of the future, some Local 880 members have taken the first step in responding to changes in our economy, our society, and our needs as caregivers by hosting in-home vision meetings.

Connecting with the Vision

  At our Annual Leadership
  Conference in October,
  members gathered for a
  two-day event that centered
  on exploring the union’s
  10-year vision.

“My vision for the next ten   years is for all agency   workers to be union   members so that we don’t   have to go without pay  and  we can keep our   families home as long as   possible."

Donna Spencer
Indianapolis, IN

“If it wasn’t for the union   I’d still be working for   minimum wage. I want to   fight with the union to get   better health care and  get better wages for me  and  my children.”

Shawna Schurman
Help At Home
Pekin, IL
